Amia Bakery | Fremont, California
Piece of Cake, 2012
Bakers, like artists, spend much of their time and effort perfecting and advancing their technique. Working primarily with ink and charcoal, I have produced a series of drawings as part of a commission completed for Amia Bakery in Fremont, California. I’ve blended the practices of unit measurement and color mixing used in baking with the art-making practices of perspective drawing and sketching, to emphasize the relationship between the scientific and creative processes involved in both methods. In addition to rendering charcoal sketches of plated baked goods, I also investigate the many intricacies that go into creating the rich colors of decorative cake fondant by mixing washes of ink on paper and listing the detailed measurements for each unit of color. This commissioned piece, as a whole, not only represents my work as an artist, but also my appreciation for the sweeter things that life has to offer.
