Virions
I have always been fascinated by science. Spending much of my undergraduate career as a pre-med student, studying organic chemistry and biology, I learned a lot about virions, their composition and their effects on the human body. A virion is defined as a virus particle. While studying these complex structures, I could not help but notice the beauty behind these microscopic nucleoproteins.
This media-media series titled Virions consists of viruses loosely drawn with charcoal on the paper of old medical journals. While the science behind these deadly structures can be found in medical journals, the beauty of these virions can be found by its visual representation. There is a certain dichotomy when it comes to science and art, often represented by the left brain and right brain division. While medical professionals and scientists seek to contain the actions of deadly viruses, artists seek to spread their artwork to the masses, much like virions that take viral genomes from cell to cell. This series contains the visual representation of specific viruses, seen under the microscope, such as HIV, Cholera and Ebola.
